Blue Line K-9 Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about our dog training programs, e-collar safety, guarantees, and training methods.

Will my dog benefit from this training?

Absolutely! You will enhance your dog's well-being and happiness with our comprehensive training program. Many common behavior issues, such as biting, chewing, and jumping, often stem from a lack of exercise, discipline, and mental stimulation. Our top-quality obedience training empowers your dog to enjoy the freedom of being off-leash, allowing them to run and play safely.

Our training ensures your dog stays engaged and active, fulfilling their need for exercise and discipline. This not only improves your dog's behavior but also enriches the lives of you and your family.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Most Blue Line K-9 locations proudly offer support for the life of your dog, including refresher courses as needed, once your dog completes one of our highly effective programs. While some behavioral challenges may be complex, we are dedicated to providing exceptional training and support to ensure your complete satisfaction. Contact your local center to learn more about specific guarantees before beginning your training journey.

What if I have a small dog?

That is fine! We make training fun and easy for every breed, every size, and any age. Our certified trainers are experts in all methods of training and will adjust for the best results.

What is the best age to start training?

We recommend that training starts from the moment you get your dog. When it comes to working with a trainer, for best results we suggest above 16 weeks old. With younger puppies we recommend our Puppy Classes or our Puppy Jump Start program online which will allow you to learn with your pup until you are ready to work with a trainer.

What is clicker training?

Clicker training is a popular and effective method of animal training that uses a clicker device to mark desired behaviors. The clicker is a small, handheld device that makes a distinct "click" sound when pressed. This sound acts as a marker to precisely indicate to the animal the specific behavior that is being rewarded.

What is The Blue Line K-9 Training Method?

Blue Line K-9 Training utilizes a structured and effective approach to dog training that combines elements of obedience, behavior modification, and specialized training techniques. Our method includes:

  • Balanced Training Approach: Integrating both positive reinforcement and corrective measures
  • Obedience Training: Core commands establishing a foundation of good behavior
  • Behavior Modification: Tailored programs for specific behavioral issues
  • Individualized Training Plans: Customized to your dog's specific needs
  • Off-Leash Freedom: Achieving reliable off-leash control for safety and enjoyment
  • Owner Education: Teaching you how to effectively communicate with your dog

How much time per day do I need to train my dog?

The best part about our training program is that you don't need to carve out a special time each day to train your dog! We'll show you how to seamlessly integrate the training into your daily routine. On average, you'll spend just 35 minutes throughout the day helping your dog learn and grow. It's convenient, effective, and designed to fit effortlessly into your lifestyle.

What is an e-collar and how does it work?

An e-collar is a fantastic tool for training and communicating with your dog. Think of it as a collar with a gentle stimulation feature, similar to an electric fence collar, but used in a positive and effective way. Controlled by a remote, the e-collar allows you to guide your dog from up to 400 yards away, giving them plenty of freedom while keeping them safe and focused.

It's important to note that the e-collar is not used as a punishment or "shock" device. Instead, it's like a gentle tap on the shoulder or a phone set to vibrate—just a way to get your dog's attention. Our training method ensures that your dog learns to understand these "taps" as signals to pay attention, never as something scary or harmful.

Will my dog need to always wear the e-collar?

Not at all! Your dog won't always need to wear the e-collar. Inside your home, you'll find that your furry friend will quickly start responding to your commands without it. However, we do recommend using the e-collar when your dog is off-leash outside. It's a bit like an invisible leash that helps you maintain control in unpredictable situations.

Think of it like a seatbelt for kids: parents emphasize wearing a seatbelt every time because it only takes one unexpected moment to make a difference. Similarly, using the e-collar outside ensures that you can keep your dog safe and focused, even if something exciting grabs their attention.

Will the e-collar hurt my dog?

Absolutely not! The e-collar is designed to be gentle and safe for your dog. During our first meeting, we'll put the e-collar on your arm so you can experience firsthand how mild the stimulation is. To further reassure you, we'll demonstrate it on ourselves to show you that it won't harm your dog at all.

There are some misconceptions about e-collars, like the idea that they can burn skin or feel like a taser—these are simply not true. We are passionate dog trainers because we LOVE dogs, and we are committed to their well-being. We would never use anything that could harm them in any way.

Will my dog dislike wearing the e-collar?

Not at all! In fact, most dogs absolutely love it. You'll be pleasantly surprised to see that your dog quickly associates the e-collar with excitement and fun. When you turn on the e-collar, it makes a beep, and soon enough, your dog will recognize this sound as the start of their favorite activities. Many dogs come running eagerly when they hear that beep, sitting patiently for you to put it on.

Why do they love it so much? Because the e-collar means it's time to head outside for some fun and freedom—whether it's playing fetch, exploring, or engaging in stimulating training sessions. A bored dog can become a destructive dog, but a trained and exercised dog is a happy dog.
